What Is a Lanai? How to Use One in Your Outdoor Space

lanai design

Hanging planters not only add a touch of greenery but also create a natural barrier for privacy. Choose trailing plants or vines that grow densely to create a lush and secluded atmosphere. For a classic look that still feels streamlined, look for light tone wood details.

Creating Tranquil Lanai Room Ideas

Lanais often open up into wider living spaces, so it wouldn't be entirely incorrect to relate them to covered patios or verandas as well. Their main draw is that they make it possible to enjoy the outdoors year-round. Screened lanais can keep out bugs, and paneled lanais—which either come in glass or plastic and can be removed—can help regulate the temperature once the weather cools. Finally, an "under-truss" lanai describes one that was built under a home's existing footprint with enclosure screens that are secured to the roof. In areas that experience frequent severe storms, an under-truss lanai can be a safer option. Tropical themes are a favorite, utilizing lush greenery, bamboo furniture, and vibrant colors to evoke a paradise-like ambiance.

Dive into Relaxation

This is seriously one of the most aesthetic ideas on this entire list, so buckle up. I have found that getting a good understanding of you can decorate a space gives you more room to add personality to it. You don’t want to just copy and paste, so make sure that you infuse everything you do with a little bit of yourself. Continuing with the relaxing coastal theme, matching nightstands, wall shelves, and a drawer cabinet are coherently incorporated into the design. These pieces boast sleek lines and a strong organic wood pattern, harmoniously fusing nature-inspired spirit and modern aesthetics. Solar-powered lights are an eco-friendly and cost-effective option for illuminating your lanai.

Types of Lanai Designs: Finding the Perfect Fit

Then add a flat-screen TV and microwave for the perfect hang out room. Feel as though you’re walking into your own tropical oasis every time you step out to your backyard. Choose tropical woods for the roof, decking, and overall construction of your lanai.

Strategic Lighting Design

Real estate professionals have noted that a lanai offers an 80 percent return on investment. Here, we’ll show you the qualities of a lanai  and why you should add one to your home. Interior design and decor are my bread and butter, so you may not be surprised to learn that these are not my only ideas.

Lanais are common in Hawaiian architecture and have both commercial and residential applications. In simple terms, lanai refers to a rear porch covered by a house’s existing roofline, which extends over the stone or concrete foundation. Designing his own family home, Architect Miko delos Reyes set out to craft a sustainable structure that emphasizes natural light and ventilation.

Imagine basking in the soft rays of the sun as they filter through lush greenery while enjoying the comforts of a well-appointed interior. But lanais are not always fully screened in; oftentimes, one wall is open and exposed to the elements. As for how to design and decorate a lanai, stick to bright shades that complement the outdoors. You'll want to invest in weatherproof outdoor furniture too; classic options like wicker or rattan will only heighten your lanai's vacation aesthetic. Roll out a patterned outdoor rug to define the seating arrangements, and add plenty of tropical houseplants for color and texture. Finally, throw in plush pillows that encourage settling in, and keep a well-stocked bar cart nearby for all your happy hour needs.

Inspiration for Modern Outdoor Lanai Designs

And to ensure comfort even during hot days or evenings, lanterns and ceiling fans are elegantly integrated into the lanai porch design. Incorporating plants and greenery into your lanai design adds a touch of nature and enhances the overall aesthetics. Choose plants that thrive in your climate and consider vertical gardens or hanging planters to maximize space.

Repurposed Wooden Crates for Storage

Coastal themes incorporate nautical elements like rope accents and ocean-inspired decor. Modern lanai designs focus on clean lines, minimalism, and contemporary furnishings. Rustic themes often feature natural wood, vintage items, and a cozy, cabin-like feel.

The partial covering over a lanai is usually an extension of the roof of the main house. As a result, lanais (unlike patios) are incorporated into the floor plan. In some cases, a lanai can even be fully covered with screens or glass panels. On the other hand, patios are usually more exposed to the outdoors, unless they are also outfitted with screens. Consider the intended use of your lanai when deciding on its size.

Also, keep safety in mind – they should be planted firmly in the ground, away from flammable materials. Integrating these colorful accessories into your lanai design can be a fun and creative process. Emphasizing their practicality and aesthetic appeal, bamboo shades are a must-have for any lanai.

Stripes and chevrons are easy to add with the help of a little painter’s tape. Moreover, while lanais can be big enough to fit a pool inside, patios are generally much smaller. The first consideration when choosing the roof is that it complements the rest of your house, while also providing sufficient light. Instead, contact a licensed contractor to discuss possible solutions. Their commitment to customer satisfaction and workmanship guarantees a beautifully executed and worry-free project.

40 Halloween Nail Ideas for 2023, Spooky Cute Halloween Manicure

When it comes to staying at the forefront of Halloween nail fashion, it’s all about embracing the latest trends. Online tutorials like our gel nails guide here also provide valuable insights and inspiration. Halloween is right around the corner, and if you’re ready to take your spooky game to the next level, we’ve got just the thing for you. Celebrating creativity and promoting a positive culture by spotlighting the best sides of humanity—from the lighthearted and fun to the thought-provoking and enlightening. Scorpio season begins at the end of October and coincides with Halloween. Celebrate by adorning your talons with these spooky little stingers.

Halloween Nail design #48

Ace potions class with these matte tips featuring bottled witch's brews. These will look just right with a gnarled broom and bubbling cauldron. Whether you're a Slytherin or just a snake charmer, bring serpents to the tips of your fingers with these chic, coiling tips.

Horror Movie Mani

Try a mix of pumpkin and earth tones, then two sheer neutral bases dotted with falling leaves.

Whimsical Witch

We talk a lot about what to put on your nails, but what about their shape? Coffin nails can be worn all year long, but the spookiest night of the year is a great time to dress them in all-black. First, cut the sides of your tips before filing them at an angle, while keeping the top straight (or slightly pointed depending on your preference).

For an elegant take on Halloween nails, try a glossy black mani with a chunky gold glitter accent nail. Focus the glitter at the base of the cuticle and thin it out toward the center of the nail for a diffused effect. Fruity nail art for summer is always fun — but the fear of the look coming off as juvenile is understandable. "If you're feeling less cutesy, negative space shapes add dimension," Tuttle suggests.

Spirited Set

Grab some nail tape and lay it right at the tips of your nails before painting in the area with your black polish. There's something about the West Coast that is just effortlessly cool, laid back, and very chill — especially Los Angeles. Even die-hard New Yorkers, clad in their monochrome tones, are susceptible to falling for the jeans and T-shirt uniform that's synonymous with California. That covetable, barely-even-tried vibe is the same from head to toe... Los Angeles nail art designs are some of the most innovative in the country — full of color, unstructured lines, shapes, and your occasional fruit every now and then.

Upgraded Coffin Nails

Of course, you can always skip the nail art altogether and opt for a solid-color mani in a Halloween-y shade instead. That includes black, white, and green, but we have a soft spot for orange—it's perfect for fall in general, looking just as seasonal on November 1 as it does on October 31. This mystical manicure is the perfect blend of sophistication and fantasy—making it an ideal look for the Halloween season. These free-flowing, drippy French tips in the classic Halloween shades of black, white, and orange are just adorable.

Fake blood is to Halloween what fireworks are to the Fourth of July. This dripping manicure is the perfect amount of kitschy and classic. To DIY, use a toothpick with a hefty drop of polish on the end. Dollop it on your nail and lightly draw it towards the cuticle to create the drip appearance.

Halloween Nails ideas #37

This look borrows from Fourth of July nails with all the stars and stripes. The orange-gold foil tips paired with silver and black reads as Halloween-themed without going full-fledged with spiders, gore, and ghosts. Aura nails are making a comeback this season and we're not mad about it. According to this tutorial, you should apply a base coat before using a sponge to lightly dab a second shade on. When your nails are somewhat dry, go in with another color and focus it on the center of your nails to get the glowy effect.

While candy is top tier, we also love a warm beverage for the spooky season, and this Starbucks-inspired look can be enjoyed long after the holiday ends. Recreate this marbled style with a nail art brush and multiple hues of brown polish. If you need a visual or more fun marbled looks to try, here's a helpful tutorial. These are so fun, and incorporate the color blue, which is less seen in typical Halloween nail designs. Originally by @ritaremark for essie, they can be achieved with the shade Left on Shred, Blanc and a fine detail brush. Sometimes people forget that purple is a Halloween color, but not @bycheznails, who created this design.

A fine detail brush will definitely be necessary for these nails by @onenailtorulethemall. These cute designs of pumpkins, ghosts, witches, and moons look like illustrations from a children’s book. You can paint them on top of a clear coat which makes it simpler. The details on these ghosts is what really makes the design so cool. You can see they sort of drape as if they’re actually little sheets sitting on your nails.

Glamorous vampire, magical witch, dark angel—this sparkly mani will complement them all. Keep the base neutral and alternate between V-shape French and glitter-dips for a super pretty (and versatile!) look. Not in this case, thanks to the Scream ghosts that add a Halloween element to this otherwise pretty-in-pink nail look. For those who celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), this design is worth considering. The sugar skull-inspired design will require a steady hand, so you may want to book an appointment for this screenshot-worthy nail look.

Whichever method you choose, you'll want to seal everything in with a matte top coat. Grab your favorite red nail polish to create the thin, blood-red base, and finish off by painting tips black to recreate the look. To recreate nail artist Amy Tran's simple Halloween nail design, use a toothpick dipped in black nail polish to create the points of the bat. From there, connect the points, creating swooped wings and a diamond-shaped body.

To recreate this iconic design, apply a matte black base before adding red drops to the tips. Oh, and don’t forget to add the signature white mask on your ring fingers using a striping brush. Say his name three times, and you might find “Beetlejuice” written across your nails. Use his signature colors—white, black and green—to create the swirls, splats and spider designs inspired by the hit '80s movie.

This 3D manicure can take your dark red polish to the next level. To get the look, apply a coat of nail polish and let it dry before laying some polygel over your nails for the dimensional effect. Have fun creating different swirls and shapes that will really bring your design to life.

The Bath House (one of the first Art Deco buildings in the southwest) is a Dallas Landmark and was originally completed in 1930. It was designed by Dallas architect Jon Carsey, who was influenced by the Paris Exposition of 1925. When it opened, the Municipal Bath House (as it was then known) was used by the citizens of Dallas as an escape from the summer heat. There was a sandy beach that extended from the building out into the lake, locker rooms on the ground floor and concession stands in the basement. In 1958 the Bath House closed and swimming was prohibited to allow the lake to be used as a water supply for the city.
